The typically glamorous magician’s assistant has become an icon in popular culture, evoking an air of mystery and personal sacrifice. Involving manipulation of the human body, misdirecting the audiences attention and more often than not, being the mechanic behind the illusion, the magician’s assistant is often overlooked next to their principal, holding props and serving themselves as living props themselves. For this shoot, we were inspired by vintage 1920's and 30's photographs of magicians, contortionists and their assistants including the eerily beautiful Bess Houdini, wife and assistant to the iconic illusionist and escapologist.
